'Graphic Alert' AIDS Posters Exhibition on View at GC
"The graphics, which range from beautiful to funny to harrowing, exhibit regional styles and serve regional needs," said curator Adrienne Klein, Director of Special Projects and Research Integrity Officer.
"Graphic Alert: AIDS Posters from Around the World," a collection of 25 posters from 19 countries, is now on view in the GC's Exhibition Hallway, located on the first floor of 365 Fifth Avenue.
The posters are from countries including Ghana, Sweden, Turkey, and Bahrain and date from the 1980s through the present.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Centers for Disease Control's first official Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report that described a nameless, fatal syndrome, now known as AIDS.
"The graphics, which range from beautiful to funny to harrowing, exhibit regional styles and serve regional needs," said curator Adrienne Klein, Director of Special Projects and Research Integrity Officer in the GC's Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. "Across cultures, the posters convey key messages: here's how the disease is spread; take precautions; show compassion for those who are infected; and, in more recent years, here's how to live with AIDS."
The posters are largely drawn from the University of Rochester's AIDS Education Posters Collection, which consists of over 8,000 posters donated to the university by Dr. Edward C. Atwater.
