Lev Manovich Named a Presidential Professor

Manovich is an innovator and influencer in many fields, including new media art, data visualization, digital humanities, and software studies.

The Graduate Center of The City University of New York is pleased to announce the appointment of Lev Manovich as a presidential professor. Manovich, a faculty member in The Graduate Center’s Ph.D. Program in Computer Science and its M.S. Program in Data Analysis and Visualization, is an innovator in multiple fields. His contributions have been influential in the development of digital culture studies, new media art, data visualization, digital humanities, and software studies. He is the author of 13 books, including his renowned book, The Language of New Media.

Manovich is a pioneer in the application of data science for analysis of contemporary culture. His concept of “cultural analytics” guides his current research, which involves exploration and visualization of large cultural datasets. He is a founder and director of the Cultural Analytics Lab that has collaborated with The Museum of Modern Art, Getty Research Institute, Austrian Film Museum, and others to analyze their collections.

Manovich recently completed the manuscript of his new book, Cultural Analytics, for MIT Press. He is currently directing Elsewhere, a research project that looks at how contemporary culture has developed and diffused around the world since beginning of globalization.
