NYT Launches New Site with Study Produced by LIS Team

April 22, 2014

The New York Times has launched a new feature, The Upshot, with an extensive report, 'Losing the Lead,' produced by a team from the Graduate Center's Luxembourg Income Study Center. The NYT-LIS study deals with the distribution and growth of household income across countries and found that the U.S. middle class is no longer the world's most affluent.

The team-LIS director Janet Gornick, professor of political science and sociology at the GC, operations director Thierry Kruten, and senior scholar Branko Milanovic-produced an entirely new set of results, drawing on 164 LIS datasets from twenty-three countries, covering the period 1979 to 2010.

The NYT site includes additional information about the data and a note on the process that led them to LIS. Further explanation of the data can be found at LIS, including an Excel file with the detailed results underlying the study.
