Adewumi Bakare is part of the inaugural cohort of students of the newly minted M.S. Program in Nanoscience at the CUNY Graduate Center since the Fall of 2020. He graduated with a B.Sc. in Engineering Physics from Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria. His capstone project was focused on elemental analysis of Black Locust beams using the Particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) technique. He served as Assistant Editor in Chief of his college science magazine, and held the position of student representative as Academic Secretary during that period. He decided to come across the Atlantic to New York City in pursuit of advanced studies and for reconnecting personal ties.

Adewumi is conducting research in the field of computational analysis with Prof. Angelo Bongiorno at the College of Staten Island. He is currently investigating the electronic and thermal properties of MgO and CaO in the quasi harmonic approximation using density functional theory. He is scheduled to defend his thesis in the Spring 2022. While at CUNY, he was also engaged in the collection, filtering and analysis of covid-19 data, beyond his duties as a Master’s student.

Adewumi, is currently an intern under the supervision of James Scholtz, CEO of Vyir Technology Inc., at the Advanced Science Research Center. He is focused on the fast deposition of silicon dioxide on silicon wafers by means of Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition. He employs Ellipsometry for the characterization of the optical properties of these nanostructures.

Adewumi sees himself working in a nanofabrication facility in the future, where he intends to pursue new approaches in designing novel nanomaterials with superior optical and absorption properties. with enhanced mechanical strength. He would also like to continue with his research in computational analysis. He does not exclude applying for a PhD in Physics. When he is not engaged in academic activities, he loves spending time with his family, watching/playing soccer and singing. Although rarely convenient, he loves to sleep as well.
