Student Awarded Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship

Ph.D. student Mae Miller (Earth and Environmental Sciences) was awarded a highly competitive Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship, which provides three years of financial support to students whose research, teaching, and service promote diversity.
 
Miller's research focuses on the historical geographies of the African diaspora and Black radical tradition. Her dissertation combines archival research, oral histories, and literary analysis to explore transnational political activism and community formations among Black British sailors in the early 20th century.

Miller is advised by Professor Ruth Wilson Gilmore (Earth and Environmental Sciences), whose research interests include revolution and reform, environments and movements, prisons, urban-rural continuities, and the African diaspora.
