WNYC News shared highlights from "The State of the Unions 2017," the annual report from CUNY's Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies, co-authored by Distinguished Professor Ruth Milkman (GC, Sociology) and Professor Stephanie Luce (GC/Joseph S. Murphy Institute, Labor Studies).
On Labor Day, WNYC News shared highlights from "The State of the Unions 2017," the annual report from CUNY's Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies, co-authored by Distinguished Professor Ruth Milkman (GC, Sociology) and Professor Stephanie Luce (GC/Joseph S. Murphy Institute, Labor Studies).
WNYC shared findings from the report showing that "just over 24 percent of working New Yorkers are members of a labor union compared with 10.7 percent of all Americans."
Luce pointed out to WNYC that New York has bucked the nationwide decline in union membership because industries that are still thriving in New York, such as construction and hotels, still rely on unionized workers.
Milkman, who is widely known as a sociologist of labor and labor movements, is also the research director at the Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies.
