David Papineau was educated in Trinidad, England, and South Africa. He has a BSc in mathematics from the University of Natal and a BA and Ph.D. in philosophy from Cambridge. He has previously held posts at Reading University, Macquarie University, Birkbeck College London, and Cambridge University, and is currently Professor of Philosophy of Natural Science at King’s College London and Presidential Professor at the Graduate Center.
Papineau’s books include Reality and Representation (1987), Philosophical Naturalism (1993), Thinking about Consciousness (2002), and Philosophical Devices (2012). He served as president of the British Society for the Philosophy of Science from 1993 to 1995, of the Mind Association from 2009 to 2010, and of the Aristotelian Society from 2013 to 2014. He writes a blog, More Important Than That, about the philosophical dimensions of sport, and in 2017 will publish a book on this theme with Basic Books.
