Research Interests

My most enduring scholarly interest has been Greek poetry, particularly Hellenistic poetry, and especially the work of Callimachus of Cyrene. I am now at work on a new Loeb Callimachus to replace both Mair’s edition of the Hymns (1921) and Trypanis’ Aetia and other fragments (1958). I also read Greek poetry more broadly. In Timon of Phlius: Pyrrhonism into Poetry, I explore the intersection of poetry and philosophy, and in my latest, Berenice II and the Golden Age of Ptolemaic Egypt, the interrelation of poetry and history. To put it all in perspective I am now collaborating with Joseph Farrell on a three volume Oxford History of Classical Literature.

I am also devoted to classical bibliography. Through my work on the Database of Classical Bibliography, the Année philologique, especially through its governing body, la Société internationale pour bibliographie classique, and the Oxford Bibliography Online, I work to document the history of research in our field and to streamline access to it.
