Gene Fellner is Associate Professor of Education at the College of Staten Island and at the CUNY Graduate Center where he teaches an arts-based research course. Before earning his master’s and doctoral degrees, he spent over 30 years as a professional artist and political activist. He was a member of the Attica Brothers Defense in the ‘70s and he was a Brigadista in Nicaragua in the ‘80s. His art has almost always reflected his political commitments and he has published, occasionally, the GLF Occasional — booklets on art and text about social and political issues. In his more academic work, he explores the spaces where art and research meet and works with adolescents and university students to interrogate issues of race, pedagogy, disability and social action.
