Haydee Salmun is an Associate Professor of Earth Sciences in Hunter College’s Department of Geography and in the Earth & Environmental PhD Program of The Graduate Center of CUNY. Her research work concentrates on understanding and modeling processes in geophysical fluid mechanics, particularly as applied to interdisciplinary aspects of atmospheric, marine and environmental sciences. She worked extensively on the study of turbulent mixing in aquatic environments, on the impact of land-surface heterogeneities on climate and climate variability and on assessing the local impact of US east coast winter storms and developing a statistical approach to prediction of the associate storm surge using local measurements from NOAA buoy stations. Her current research projects focus on (1) the dynamics of the Southern Ocean and the connections between that dynamics and climate, in particular in the context of a future anticipated climate change, (2) determining Atmospheric Boundary Layer heights from operational Wind Profiler data, regionally and globally and (3) investigating changes in extratropical storms along the Patagonian shelf in the next century using CMIP5 data. She is a committed advocate for women and other underrepresented minorities in science and engineering, has taught and written about issues of gender and diversity in science and about teaching in STEM disciplines.
