Michaela Soyer is an Associate Professor in the Sociology Department at Hunter College. Her research focuses on how agency is expressed under oppressive circumstances. She has written three monographs about justice involved young men in the United States and Germany. Her latest book "The Price of Freedom- Criminalization and Management of ‘Outsiders’ in Germany and the United States (forthcoming with University of California Press) is a comparative study of the juvenile and criminal justice system in Pennsylvania and the Southern German state Baden- Württemberg.
Her next book projects focuses on the life-course of a group of 40 men who were incarcerated before, during and after World War II in German prisons and concentration camps.
