Stuart Liebman

Professor Emeritus Stuart Liebman's research focuses on two principal areas: the intersections of the cinema with modernism in the arts, and the representation of history in films. He has published widely on early French cinema, American avant-garde cinema, Soviet cinema, films about the Holocaust, and post-World War II German cinema. His awards include a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, and the special issue of October (No. 72), entitled "Berlin 1945: War and Rape," which he co-edited with Annette Michelson, received the Association of American Publishers prize for the best single issue of a scholarly journal in 1995. In 2006 he was named an "Academy Film Scholar" by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles for his book project on films made about the Holocaust during the first decade after World War II. He has served as a member of the Advisory Board for the critical journal October and is a former member of the Board of Trustees of Anthology Film Archives in New York City.
