Yana Kuchirko examines sociocultural and ecological contexts of child development. Specifically, she focuses on how children's early experiences in their everyday settings (home, neighborhood, school) vary by ethnicity/race, socioeconomic status, and gender, and how features of children's everyday interactions relate to later educational outcomes. Social justice is a central facet of Kuchirko's work. Through a strengh-based perspective on research, Kuchirko seeks to challenge dominant, deficit-oriented narratives about ethnic-racial minority children's development.
