Recruitment of GC Faculty
Procedures for recruitment of faculty for appointments at the Graduate Center are, briefly, as follows. Approval for a new faculty appointment or replacement must be obtained from the Provost and Senior Vice President. Specific instructions for recruitment within affirmative action guidelines are available from the Executive Director of Institutional Equity and Chief Diversity Officer/Title IX Coordinator, Jessica Morak (212-817-7101). The University Statement on Academic Personnel Practices provides that "the recruitment effort for any full-time faculty appointment should normally be of at least one year's duration." Advertisements must be posted for two months. To permit a placement for the Fall semester, the deadline for receipt of applications must be before the beginning of the Spring term; that is, the ad may be posted for November and December, with the deadline for receipt of applications January 1, or at least two months from the placement date of the ad. To allow for the receipt of applications after the deadline date, or if there is a need to extend the search beyond the deadline date, the ad may say "review of applications will begin January 1." CUNY policy requires that all GC ads state: "The Graduate Center is an EEO/AA/IRCA/ADA Employer," omitting specific references to females and minorities. Interviews are conducted in the early part of the Spring semester and offers made by April (May at the latest) for the Fall semester. All applications must be retained for three years.
