Inside the Graduate Center: A Dissertation Showcase
Now in its fifth year, the Dissertation Showcase is an annual celebration of student research. In this popular event, doctoral students describe their research in three minutes or less, creating a public talk for a general audience. It is also a chance for the public to sample important work being done by Graduate Center students. Those who are defending this spring or who have already defended their dissertations in the 2021–2022 academic year are eligible to apply.
“Inside the CUNY Graduate Center: A Dissertation Showcase” will be an online event this year, with selected doctoral students featured in short live Zoom presentations about their work. Each student will have three minutes and one slide, and presentations will run back-to-back. President Robin Garrell will introduce the evening, and, after the presentations, students will get to interact live with the public.
Applications are due on March 20, 2022, by midnight, and must be submitted via the application portal. Submissions will be reviewed by a committee of Graduate Center faculty, staff, and students. Participants who are selected will be notified via email by April 7. We receive many more applications than we can accommodate. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to submit proposals.
Participating students will receive coaching from Graduate Center faculty and staff on public presentation, as well as an honorarium of $250. The Presidential Prize for Public Communication will be given to the student who does the best job translating his or her research for the public, chosen by a panel of judges. And new this year, viewers will decide on the Audience Choice Award by voting for their favorite presenter. After the event, students will receive professional videos of their presentations to use for their own career advancement.
Past participants have said the event was a highlight of their time at the CUNY Graduate Center. Please apply to be part of this year’s showcase!
