Curriculum and Degree Information

The Ph.D. Program in Theatre and Performance offers students a solid grounding in the theory, history, and criticism of theatre studies through a rich and varied curriculum. Although the program emphasizes academic studies, attempts are made to form alliances of understanding between scholars and practitioners whenever possible, and students are encouraged to take advantage of the rich resources of New York City to pursue opportunities for learning and growth outside of the classroom.

Interdisciplinary Learning

In addition to the core curriculum, students are encouraged to engage in interdisciplinary study and research by taking advantage of the numerous course offerings in other disciplines at The Graduate Center and at partner schools through the Interuniversity Doctoral Consortium.

The Graduate Center also offers a number of interdisciplinary certificate programs, in which Ph.D. students may choose to take a formal four-course sequence in an allied field. The Theatre and Performance Ph.D. Program is closely aligned with the Certificate in Film Studies, but students may also be interested in one of the other available areas of study.
